First Look

My first look at Houston
Was a cowboy leaned up against an airport wall.
From his snakeskin boots to his Stetson hat
He was lean and hard and tall.
The disapproval in his dark eyes
The annoyance in his soft Texas drawl
Said that this Houston Knight didn't have
Any use for Chicago's super cop at all.
Now a highway ought to be a highway
Any where a man can go
But the freeway into Houston wasn't
Anything like the turnpike in Chicago.
The cowboy didn't say much
Just reached over and turned the radio on.
Between his silence and the endless fields
I felt isolated and alone.
My first Houston sunset went down
Blood red and smeared across the sky.
And this tough Chicago street cop
Was so lonely he could cry.
The lights beneath my window
Aren't the lights I used to know
And I miss my friends and family
So far away in Chicago.
When you walk the floor and wait
Dawn seems a million years away.
Some nights take forever
Turning into day.
