General Hammond picked up his coffee and headed for the briefing room with a determined
air. Since the incident with Reese and the Replicators, his best team had been
falling apart.
Colonel O'Neill had done what needed to be done, Reese, while appearing human, had
been nothing but a machine. Albeit a very advanced one. Major Carter, while understanding
the Colonel's actions, was still very irate about the damage done to the android.
Hopefully the Asgard would be able to repair the damage. If they could ever reach
any of them.
Teal'c was...Teal'c. Nothing new there.
The real problem was Dr. Jackson. Daniel had done some excellent work for them
in the past, and had been directly responsible for some of their most important
finds to date, but he was still a civilian. And as a civilian, he just didn't
understand.
The General took his seat at the head of the conference table and bit back a sigh.
There were days when he hated his job.
"All right, people. I've spoken to the President about moving the StarGate. He'd
like some more information before he gives the go ahead." Looking at Daniel, the
General said, "Dr. Jackson, we'd like you to go back to St. Louis and speak with
the Guardian again."
"Why?" Daniel asked shortly. "It's not like talking has done any good. Why don't
you just send someone to go shoot him?"
O'Neill and Carter immediately started yelling, Daniel just glared at them while
Teal'c did his infamous impersonation of the Sphinx. When it became obvious that
the recriminations flying around the room were going to degrade into personal insults,
Hammond knew it was time to take steps.
He slammed both his hands down on the table and shot to his feet. "That is enough,
people! You're all behaving like children! It's obvious that you're incapable of
dealing with this problem yourselves, so I'll deal with it for you!"
General Hammond then proceeded to give voice to an old school ass chewing. He was
eloquent, to the point and was actually enjoying giving his biggest headaches some
payback when the alarms and beacons went off.
"Intruder alert. Intruder alert. The security net on section C-18 has been breached."
Major Carter's face went pale. "That's where we have the android stored."
Daniel threw a disgusted look at her and rushed from the room, the others hot on
his heels. When they reached the supposedly secure area, several armed guards were
crouched down by the door. General Hammond took a position behind the Sgt. of the
squad. "Give me an update."
"Yes, sir. Approximately 7 minutes ago, the motion sensors in C-18 went active, but
the door seals are still intact. Baker squad is trying to get a camera in place to
get some intel," the Sgt said while pointing at another man setting up a remote
monitoring station.
The corporal nodded and spun the screen outwards, "The feed is coming through now,
sir."
Everyone huddled around the screen, trying to see what was happening on the grainy
screen. The picture was a disturbing one. Reese, whole once again, was lying on
the surgical pallet security had placed her on when they had sealed her inside C-18.
Carter shook her head, still annoyed by the fact that General Hammond wouldn't give
permission for her to study the android, she said, "Apparently it has a built in
repair function."
Daniel pointed to the far side of the screen, "I don't think so. Look there."
Off to one side, barely visible, stood a man. Fairly tall with dark hair, but his
back was to the camera and they couldn't see his face.
Hammond looked at SG-1, "Options?"
Daniel just shook his head and walked over to the door, "It may just be me, but why
don't we just look?"
Daniel had the door open and was stepping inside before anyone could stop him. O'Neill
grimaced and took the safety off his 45. "I really hate that guy sometimes," he
muttered with a grimace. O'Neill edged around the door, pistol extended, SG-1 and the
security team falling in behind him.
Once inside, O'Neill seriously thought about shooting their visitor, just for
general purposes, but put it away knowing it wouldn't do any good. "Xander. Nice
of you to drop in."
Xander's normally cheerful expression was grim and he glared at O'Neill and the others
before turning back to Reese's still form. Reaching out a hand, he gently laid it
on her forehead.
"Uh, Xander? What are you doing?" O'Neill asked.
"I fixing your fuck up, Jack. What the Hell does it look like I'm doing?" Xander
replied sarcastically.
"Xander, move away from it. It's dangerous." Carter ordered.
Xander threw a wicked smirk at the blonde, "Don't get your panties in a twist, Major.
She can't hurt me."
Carter drew her pistol and aimed it at the Guardian. "Step away, Xander."
O'Neill rolled his eyes, thoroughly irritated with everyone. "Put it away, Carter.
Guardian. Remember? It'll just piss him off."
"Oh, I'm already pissed off, Jack. But I'll deal with that later. First I have
to take care of Reese." Xander threw out one hand and a wave of power pushed SG-1 and
the security team out of the room. Only Daniel was allowed to stay inside and the
archeologist waited impatiently for Reese to open her eyes.
It didn't take long. Reese blinked a couple of times, then smiled when she saw
Daniel peering anxiously at her. Her eyes suddenly went wide and she sat
straight up, clutching her chest. "What happened? Daniel?"
Daniel patted her on the shoulder, "Calm down, Reese. I'd like you to meet a friend
of mine." Nodding his head, he said, "Reese, this is Xander."
Xander quirked a grin at her and Reese smiled in response to that cheerful expression.
"Hi, Reese. It's nice to meet you."
"It's nice to meet you too. Are you going to be my friend?"
Xander folded his arms across his chest and nodded, "I want to be, but we need to
talk, Reese. About those toys of yours."
Reese's hopeful gaze went dark, "You don't like me either! You're just like them!"
Xander's eyes went black and his voice took on the characteristic echo that indicated
he was not alone. "I'm not like them at all, Reese. You can believe that."
Reese's mouth fell open then she smiled and clapped her hands. "You are different!"
Xander grinned and formed chairs for himself and Daniel out of Hellmouth energy.
Taking a seat, Xander said, "Now, about your toys, Reese, we have to do something
about that, but first, it's time for you to grow up."
Daniel almost gave himself whiplash when he turned to look at Xander, "You can do
that?"
Xander threw his hands up, "Daniel, Guardian. I can do almost anything. And this,
this I can do. No problem." Xander leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees,
and stared into Reese's eyes. Nothing was said for several minutes, they just stared
at each other. Just when Daniel was about to completely lose his patience, Xander
sat back with a sigh. "Reese?"
"I understand now." Reese said. "I understand so much."
Xander grinned, "Thought you would. Now, about the toys. You made some serious
mistakes there, Reese. Do you know why your toys do what that do? Why they go
after technology like they do?"
"They want to survive. I told them to do that."
"That's part of it, Reese, but not all of it. They want to do more than that, they
want to be more than they are. That's why they always go for high tech. They're
trying to grow. They want to be your friends, not your toys."
Reese looked like she wanted to cry, "But I don't know how to do that!"
Xander leaned back and tucked his hands behind his head, "No sweat. I do. But first,
we need to get you home."
Xander led the way to the gateroom and up the ramp to the StarGate. He hit the ancient
object with a huge jolt of power. As soon as the portal opened, he took Reese by
the hand, and with Daniel right beside them, they stepped through.
*****
Daniel was still flabbergasted when he and Xander returned through the gate. Even the
sight of an entire squadron of armed men couldn't break through his shock. Xander
just grinned at the scowling General and nodded at O'Neill. But when he saw Carter,
his gaze went dark. "Well, kids, shall we go talk about it?"
"I'm afraid I have to place you under arrest, Dr. Jackson. Guardian, if I thought
I could hold you, I'd do the same to you." General Hammond said sternly.
Xander shook his head, "You aren't going to do shit to Daniel. You, General, and
the rest of you bozos are going to shut the fuck and listen, I'm only going to say
this once. The Replicators are no longer a problem. I'm sure you'll be hearing
from your friends soon."
"How did you destroy them?" Carter asked eagerly.
Xander and Daniel shared a disgusted look. "I didn't destroy them, Carter. I didn't
need to. I helped them evolve. Now they're sentient beings, just like Reese. They
just want to be left alone. And just to make sure you won't cause any more problems,
I shut down the star gate on the other side."
Xander propped his hands on his hips and glared at the members of StarGate command.
"You, all of you, have gone way over the line. I can't tell the good guys from
the bad guys. You go to other planets without an invitation, you kidnap people from
their homes and bring them here against their will. And then, when something bites
you in the ass, you blame the victim. If you had left Reese alone, and not fucked
with things you don't understand, the Replicators wouldn't have been loose on the
base. And when it all went wrong? What did you do? You shot Reese!"
O'Neill started to say something, but Xander cut him off. "Want to know how I knew
to come here? It had nothing to do with Reese actually." Xander reached into his
pocket and pulled out a tiny glass vial. Inside was a single grain of sand. "Know
what this is? It's all that's left of a planet. A planet that you, Major Carter,
destroyed. It was bigger than this, but once it burned through our atmosphere,
this is all that was left."
Xander's voice rang through the concrete chamber, "You destroyed a solar system!
And managed to fuck up life on three planets! The shock wave from the super nova
you created ripped through the next system, their atmosphere is bleeding
away and people are dying. But I suppose that doesn't matter. They aren't advanced
enough to do you any good. They're just simple farmers. Who cares if they die?"
Xander stared at Major Carter, not caring in the slightest about the tears streaming
down her face. "Samantha Carter. You are accused and found guilty of genocide.
I was going to send you to that planet and let you enjoy the fruits of your labors.
I can guarantee that you wouldn't have enjoyed the trip. But I've changed my mind.
I'm going to let you live Carter. In fact, I'm going to make sure you live for a
very long time. I want to give you lots of time to think about four million people
slowly suffocating. I want every moment of the rest of your life spent thinking about
how it feels to gasp for air. To feel your lungs straining for that one last breath."
Xander held the vial up to his eye and stared at it intently. "It's so tiny, but
it contains the memory of its origins and the path it took to get here." Xander
tucked the vial back into his pocket, his expression grim. "If, when, the G'uold
come to Earth, my brothers and I will be waiting for them. We'll teach them a lesson
they'll never forget. But those other people? I can't do anything for them. It
took the combined power of all three Guardians to heal Reese's planet, and that
was with using the StarGate. We can't get to that system. Even if one of your friends
could give me a ride, it's too far away. Without a direct link to this planet and
the Hellmouths, I can't save them. And that really sucks."
"General Hammond, the Hellmouth's invitation to move the StarGate to our temple has
been revoked. StarGate Command is no longer welcome there."
Xander grabbed Daniel by the arm, "You're coming with me, Daniel. You hang out with
these fuckers and they'll get you killed."
Xander looked at O'Neill one last time, "I liked you, Jack. I thought you were one
of the good guys," he said bitterly. "Guess I was wrong."
Xander was almost carrying Daniel when they stepped out of the gazebo. The archeologist
was obviously in shock. Watching Xander basically recreate a planet from scratch
had been bad enough, but then what he and Reese had done with the Replicators...
One minute there was a seething mass of replicators and in the next, a man stood
there. He looked a lot like Daniel actually, only with dark hair. The new being
looked at his own hands, looked at Reese and then smiled. "I'm alive," he'd whispered.
Xander just grinned, "You always were. Now, you and Reese need to get to work. It's
time to call the others home."
The man nodded, then asked suddenly, "Do I have a name?"
Reese put her hand on his arm, "It's up to you, but I think Marka is a good name.
That was my father's name."
Marka smiled, "I like that name." They joined hands and looked into the sky above.
Nothing was said, not out loud anyway, but expressions of excitement soon transformed
their faces. "They heard us, they're coming," Marka stated.
"What do we do?" Reese asked worriedly.
Xander shrugged, "Live, grow, learn. The two of you know enough to get things started,
and this is your world. I can't tell you how to run things, but I will tell you
this...there are enough resources on this planet to last you for several thousand
years as long as you don't abuse them. I'm going to shut down the gate here, it'll
keep you from being bothered."
Reese still looked worried, but she smiled slightly. "Thank you, Xander. For this
and for helping me make a family." She walked towards Daniel and suddenly gave him
a hug, "Thank you, Daniel. For being my friend."
"It's my pleasure, Reese. I hope you'll be happy."
To Daniel, the trip back to StarGate Command and hearing General Hammond order his
arrest was actually anti-climatic. But when Xander told them about the world they'd
destroyed in their effort to defeat the G'uold, one thought took over Daniel's mind.
It was his fault. It was all his fault.
"It's my fault. All of it. It's all my fault."
Xander frowned at Daniel and pushed him down on one of the benches in the garden.
"You can't blame yourself for what other people have done."
Daniel's face was a sickly white, "Yes, I can. I opened the gate. If it weren't
for me, how many people would still be alive?"
Xander knelt down and grabbed Daniel's hands, "Daniel, you opened the door, you didn't
hold a gun to their heads and make them go through it. And you definitely didn't
make them take a bomb with them."
"How do you know about that?"
Xander shrugged, "I went to Star Gate Command because of that meteor fragment. I
took a little stroll through the computers while I was there. That's how I found
out about Reese. And everything else. You've done a lot of good, Daniel."
Daniel lurched to his feet, running shaking hands through his unruly hair. "Does
that really matter? We shouldn't have been there in the first place!"
Xander sighed, "That's true, Daniel, but it's too late to change that. But you, you
tried to understand the people you met. You tried to help them when you could.
I can't fault you for that."
Daniel was shaking so hard now that it appeared that he was having convulsions. "It's
still my fault. All those people."
Xander's wards reached out and spoke through him, "That is not true, Daniel. You
did not destroy that sun. Samantha Carter did that. She knew how dangerous it
was, but she didn't care. We do not believe that you would have done such a thing."
Daniel shook his head, "I might have. You don't know. You can't know. I wanted
revenge. Revenge for Shari. For our life and the children we should have had. I
would have done anything to kill Apophis."
"It is impossible to judge what you might have done. Only what has been done. And
never, in all the years you have traveled to distant worlds, have you ever purposely
hurt another in your quest for revenge."
Daniel basically collapsed at that point. He lay on the ground, just staring up at
the stars. "It's still my fault. I started it. If I hadn't deciphered the code..."
Xander shook his head, "They were determined, Daniel. If it hadn't been you, they
would have found someone else. Think about it, Daniel. Think about some of the
people you've met, like Mayborne. Can you imagine what would have happened to the
people of Abydos if Mayborne had gone there? Or what about Kinsey? If it had been
anyone other than you, Earth would probably have been destroyed by now. At the
very least, we'd be at war with a dozen different races, instead of just the G'uold."
Daniel had finally lost the stricken expression, but now he wore one of resignation.
"I have to go back, Xander and face the consequences. I swore to follow the rules
when I agreed to work for the government."
Xander climbed to his feet and pulled Daniel to his. With a wicked smirk, he said,
"I read the mission plan and the charter in the mainframe, Daniel. Your job,
and that of the SG teams, is to find a way to defend Earth from the G'uold.
And let's face it, my brothers and I are your best bet. But we're more than a
little pissed right now. So I think you should do what you do best and make nice
with the natives. Tut would be a good place to start."
Xander ignored Daniel's protests and drug him back into the gazebo. At the edge
of the Hellmouth, Xander stopped and looked down into the black water, "Hey, guys!
I'd like you to deliver this package for me. It goes straight to Tut." And without
further ado, Xander shoved Daniel into the Hellmouth, laughing at the murderous
expression on the normally placid face. "Have a nice trip!"
Xander headed back into his temple, pulling his cell phone out of his pocket on the
way. It was answered on the first ring. "Hey, Cordy. Yep, I got him. Thanks for
the heads up and scratch one nuclear incident. Tut will make sure Daniel doesn't
go anywhere near anything dangerous for a very, very long time." Xander listened
for a moment, then laughed, "You're probably right. Daniel does look like someone
that would get fuck stupid. And speaking of fuck and stupid in the same breath,
how's Dead Boy?"
Xander pulled the phone away from his ringing ear, "Chill, Cordelia, I'm not deaf.
You're still torturing him, aren't you?" Xander closed the suddenly dead phone
and opened the doors leading into his bedroom, smirking at the sight of the three
naked men sprawled across his bed. Waiting for him. It was time to get a little
fuck stupid himself.
*****
Tut paced the edge of his Hellmouth portal impatiently. When Cordelia had told them
about the horrifying vision she'd had of Daniel's death, Tut had been furious. How
dare those people treat a precious creature like Daniel in such a fashion? He'd
been ready to shred Cheyenne Mountain to rumble, but Xander's cooler head had prevailed.
For a time, at least. Once inside the complex, Xander had fed all the information
in the computer mainframe through his link, and thus to his brothers.
Tut had to smile, Xander's touch with the grain of sand had been genius, sheer
genius. Ling Si had immediately crowned Xander the King of the Mind Fucks. A title
the youngest Guardian had accepted with glee.
And then Reese. Tut shook his head in amazement. To create life from bits and pieces
of metal and plastic was an accomplishment of the highest order. And now, they,
the Hellmouth Guardians, had helped to bring an entire race into being. His life
had certainly changed since Xander had accepted his Guardianship.
The portal rippled and suddenly Daniel was there. Tut pulled him out of the portal
and gave him a smile. "Daniel. It is a pleasure to see you again." Resting a
hand on Daniel's shoulder, Tut lead him out of the temple proper. "Come. I will
show you where you may take a shower and then we will talk over dinner."
Daniel still looked stunned and merely nodded in agreement. 'Yes,' Tut thought,
'his life had definitely become interesting. Very interesting indeed.'
Xander awoke to find himself surrounded. In a good way. Asher was hugging his
left side and Spike his right. And Nathaniel, like all cats, had found the warmest
spot to sleep. Curled right on top of Xander's chest.
Xander smiled as he ran his hand through Nathaniel's hair. He'd missed the were-leopard.
Asher and Nathaniel were still in St. Louis when he'd had to leave for Colorado and
despite his original intentions, he hadn't had the heart to wake them up when he'd
returned home the night before.
Hopefully, Gods, demons and bureaucrats willing, they'd have a few days before the
other ten thousand shoes decided to drop on their heads. But just in case they
didn't...
Nathaniel woke up to the stunningly pleasant sensation of warm lips nibbling on
the side of his neck and equally warm hands slowly running up and down his bare
back. And warm meant Xander.
Nathaniel purred and snuggled closer to the body he was lying on, smiling when he
heard and felt Xander chuckle.
"hey, want to sneak into the shower with me?" was whispered into his ear and he
shivered delightedly.
"oh yeah. but what about them?"
Xander snickered, "Let's leave the dead guys alone, they need their beauty rest."
Nathaniel stifled his giggles and carefully eased off the bed, pulling an eager
Xander with him.
Standing under the warm waterfall, Nathaniel remembered the first time he'd been
in this shower with Xander. It hadn't really been all that long ago, only days,
but so much had changed since then. Xander was growing accustomed to his new position
and it showed in everything he said and did. Nathaniel felt a lump growing in his
throat, Xander wouldn't need him much longer. Asher was back to his former stunning
beauty, and now there was Spike. Maybe, just maybe, he'd be allowed to stay on the
fringes, at least for a little while. But he wouldn't hold his breath. No one
needed him for long.
Oh, they were happy with him at first, but the shine soon paled. He was too needy,
too clinging, always wanted too much. Too much love, too much attention. Shrugging
off his melancholy thoughts, Nathaniel forced a bright smile, not realizing that
he hadn't fooled Xander for a second.
The Guardian carefully washed Nathaniel's long auburn hair, using the time to think.
He'd seen the look of sadness and despair on Nathaniel's face, and for a moment,
he'd thought he was the reason. Maybe Nathaniel didn't really want to be here,
be with him. It wouldn't be the first time. Look what had happened with Anya.
Maybe Nathaniel felt like he didn't have a choice. No one had really asked if
he wanted to be here.
Xander felt his stomach churn. If that was the case, he was no better than a rapist.
Even if Nathaniel had seemed eager and had never come out and said "No." From
what he'd learned since accepting his wards, no one said no to the Guardian. Not
and lived to tell about it.
But something just didn't add up. Nathaniel always seemed honestly happy to see him.
And God knew the young were-leopard was always more than ready to touch and be touched
by him. So if it wasn't him, what was it?
Xander felt slightly guilty for what he was about to do, but he had to know.
Massaging Nathaniel's scalp to distract him, Xander sent the thinnest tendril of
thought into Nathaniel's mind. Easing past the surface thoughts of pleasure and
comfort, Xander went deeper. And found darkness.
Suicidal despair. Feelings of worthlessness. Fear of being alone, being left
behind and forgotten. It wasn't easy to keep searching. He wanted to grab Nathaniel
and shake him. How could anyone so beautiful, so giving, possibly believe themselves
to be worth so little?
But he needed to know why. So he slid deeper into the darkness, and found himself
looking into what could have been his own life. Nathaniel tried so hard, gave so much
and asked for so little in return. He just wanted to be wanted, to be loved. But
he'd never gotten what he needed.
Xander was stunned. Nathaniel believed that he was going to be cast aside and
forgotten, hoping only for the smallest crumb of affection. He didn't care if
he were beaten, raped or tortured, as long as someone wanted him.
For a second, the urge to reach out and obliterate the people who'd killed Nathaniel's
self esteem was tremendous. And he could do it. Literally with a thought. But that
wouldn't fix the deeper problem. He had to convince Nathaniel that he was wanted,
desired and cherished. And that he would never be alone.
Xander pulled his wards into Nathaniel's mind with him, showing them what he had
seen. They understood immediately and knew what needed to be done. Xander grinned,
but his smile soon faded. His own feelings of inadequacy surfacing. But his wards
killed those thoughts before they'd ever really had a chance to form. They loved
him, completely and without reservation. He was worthy of them and their devotion.
Xander had the feeling that if he argued, he'd get smacked.
Clearing his throat, Xander stuttered, "Uh...Nathaniel...can I ask you a question?"
"You can do anything you want as long as you keep doing what you're doing," Nathaniel
replied with a purr.
Xander looked down and realized he was still running his hands through Nathaniel's
soap filled hair. "No problem. I like washing your hair."
Nathaniel waited, but Xander remained silent, "Xander," he asked cautiously, "what
did you want to ask me?"
Xander jumped slightly, he'd been so engrossed in the feel of silky hair running
through his fingers that he'd almost forgotten. "Um, I haven't talked to Spike
and Asher yet, but I was wondering..."
Nathaniel pulled away and turned to face him, if he were going to be tossed aside,
he wanted Xander to say it to his face. "Yes. Wondering what?"
Xander could feel his face turning red, "wouldyoubeoneofmyconsorts?"
"Uh?"
Xander groaned and hung his head, "I said, would you be one of my consorts?"
Nathaniel didn't answer and Xander immediately started babbling. "I know it's forever,
but I thought maybe...I don't know. Never mind. Forget I said anything."
Nathaniel reached out and grabbed Xander's arm before he could flee, "Say that again.
Please."
Xander took a deep breath and looked right into deep violet eyes, "Would you consider
being a consort, not a concubine. And it'd be forever."
Nathaniel's mouth fell open and just stared until Xander started to feel really
uncomfortable. "You don't have to decide right now. Take your time. Take all the
time you want. Really. I just thought I'd mention it."
Nathaniel shrieked and threw himself at Xander. Who found that while holding a wet
slippery Nathaniel was fun, it wasn't easy to do. Both men soon found themselves sitting
on the floor, Nathaniel in Xander's lap. Where he seemed to be making a concerted
effort to crawl inside Xander's skin.
Xander grinned, listening to Nathaniel's almost hysterical babbling of "Yes. Yes.
Of course. Yes. I thought you'd never ask or want to ask."
"What the bloody Hell is goin' on in here? You two are loud enough to wake the dead.
And I ought to know," Spike said grumpily, glaring at the two loons sprawled on
the shower floor.
Nathaniel grinned up at the surly vampire. "He asked." Turning to Xander, Nathaniel
demanded, "Ask him too. Now."
Xander shook his head, "Wow. Bossy now aren't you?" Giving Nathaniel a quick kiss
on the nose, Xander turned to look up at Spike. And such a pleasant sight it was.
The vampire was stark naked, his hair standing on end and he was rubbing his eyes
with one hand while scratching his balls with the other. "Spike, marry me?" Hugging
Nathaniel he added, "Us? Marry us?"
Spike stopped in mid scratch and stared. Then he blinked and stared some more.
Finally, he turned and walked back into the bedroom. A second later he was back.
"Did you say marry?"
Xander and Nathaniel both grinned and nodded, "Uh huh."
Spike just stared some more then nodded, once. "Right. Fine. But I want a ring.
A bloody big one. And a honeymoon with lots of sex. And blood. I'm no pushover.
Can't just expect to marry me without cozying up to me first."
Xander and Nathaniel scrambled up off the floor and Spike soon found himself surrounded
by warm, wet flesh. Not that he was complaining.
Asher woke up alone. Not a pleasant, or common, sensation. At least not lately.
Hearing murmurs, he looked over the side of the bed to find Spike on the floor
with Xander and Nathaniel crawling all over him. And for some reason, Spike was
wearing the biggest, gawdiest diamond ring he'd ever seen. "What's going on?"
The three men on the floor turned identical looks of avarice on him and he was
momentarily concerned. "Get him," Nathaniel whispered gleefully. And Asher
soon found himself in the unlikely position of being proposed to. By three men.
All at once. So he did what any sane, rational man, or vampire, would do. He
said yes.
Enjoying a vision was still a fairly new experience for Cordelia. Where she had
been accustomed to soul-shattering pain, now she just felt a quiet warmth. And
the visions were much, much easier to decipher. She now knew exactly when, where
and occasionally, why, the event was taking place.
Her co-workers also appreciated her new found skill. Their injuries since the merging
were slight. A few scrapes and bruises. Nothing life-threatening had occurred in
days. It was almost like taking a vacation.
Which is why everyone one was so startled when Cordelia started screaming. They
rushed to her side, wanting to help, but not really sure what to do. She didn't
sound as if she were in pain...actually, she sounded angry. Very angry.
Wesley, being an intelligent man, grabbed Gunn and slowly backed away from the
enraged seer. Angel, while no one would call him stupid, at least not to his face,
decided to take his unlife into his hands and asked, "Cordy? What's wrong?"
Gunn closed his eyes and Wesley gulped. Cordelia's eyes flashed open and she glared.
"What's wrong? What's wrong? I'll tell you what's wrong!" she shreiked, her strident
voice making Angel wince in pain at the abuse of his sensitive ears. "That, that...MORON...
is getting married! Now what am I going to do?"
Cordelia proceeded to tell all and sundry exactly what she thought of said moron,
her blatant descriptions leaving nothing to the imagination. Angel, once again,
decided to prove just how brave he actually was. "Uh, Cordy? Who are you talking
about?"
Gunn sank down onto the couch and buried his head in his hands. Wesley collapsed
next to his lover and muttered, "Dear Lord. She's going to kill him."
Gunn shook his head, "Nah, that'd be too quick. She's gonna make him suffer."
Wesley leaned back and propped his feet up on the overstuffed ottoman, "So, while
we wait for the carnage to begin...who do you think she's speaking of?"
Gunn grinned, "I figure she's talking about Xander. He is her ex."
Wesley's eyes went wide, "Which one do you think? Nathaniel maybe?"
Cordelia immediately forgot what she'd been planning to do to Angel, and jumped into
the middle of the conversation. "Oh no. Not Xander. He couldn't pick just one.
He's getting hitched to all of them. Asher, Nathaniel and Spike."
"And do you have a problem with that, Cordy?"
"Humph. Of course not. Xander needs more than one person to keep him in line.
But what the Hell do you get a Hellmouth Guardian for a wedding present? Especially
one that's getting married to two vampires and a were-leopard. Two male vampires
and a boytoy were-leopard. I mean, Miss Manners never exactly covered this
particular situation. And what am I going to wear?"
******
Xander knew immediately that he was dreaming. Which was odd. Since he'd been
bonded to the Hellmouths, he hadn't had one dream. But here he was, dressed in
his old clothes, lying in a field under a tree. A huge fucking tree. "Okay,
this is weird." Shrugging, Xander climbed to his feet and started walking. After
a good fifteen minutes of fast walking, he still hadn't managed to get out from
under the sweeping branches.
"Going somewhere, Xander?"
Xander whirled when he heard Cordelia at her sarcastic best. "Cordy? What are
you doing here?"
Cordy rolled her eyes and propped her hands on her generously curved hips. "Duh.
Xander, meet Yggdrasil. Ygg, this is my ex. Xander."
A single branch curved down and brushed against Xander's shoulder and Xander felt
the presence of another in his mind. There weren't any words, just a feeling of
welcome and peace. As the branch moved away, the presence left him, but the feeling
of peace remained.
Cordy laughed at the stunned look on Xander's face. "Cool, huh?" Reaching up,
Cordy gently ran one hand along the trunk of the massive sentinel, "I've never
been happier than I am when I'm here. Here, everything makes sense. There's no
worries, no trauma, no disasters just waiting to happen."
Cordy sighed, "But that isn't why I brought you here." Reaching out, she slapped
Xander on the arm, hard.
Xander grabbed his arm, yelling, "Ow! What the Hell was that for?"
With a grin Cordy said, "I wanted to make sure you realized that you weren't dreaming."
Smacking him again she added, "And that's for planning to get married and not
inviting me, you schmuck."
Xander's mouth fell open, but he closed it with a snap when he saw her raise her
hand again. "Okay, okay. Geez, chill. I apologize profusely, all right? I didn't
really think you'd care or I'd have sent you an engraved invitation. We're doing
it tonight, can you make it by then? Or should I come get you?"
Cordy grinned, "I'll be there, and I'll be bringing the guys with me."
"I can't wait to see the look on DeadBoy's face," Xander said with laugh. "Now,
Cordy, be a sweetheart and tell me how to get back?"
Xander's vision started to blur and he heard her laughing, "That's easy, Xander,
wake up." Just as he felt his body start to stir she called out, "Wait! What
are the wedding colors?"
Xander smirked, "Black leather. What else?" The calculating look on Cordy's face
was the last thing he saw before his vision went totally black.
*****
Tut knew he was pouting, he just didn't care. Daniel had been with him for almost
a week now and frankly, the young man was driving him insane. All he wanted to
do was talk about ancient Egypt. And talk and talk and talk. Even getting him to
be quiet long enough to eat or sleep was proving to be difficult.
Tut had hopes for Daniel. Hopes that now lay crumbled in the dust. Daniel Jackson
was, without a doubt, the least sexual creature he had ever met. Subtle hints
didn't work. Blatant invitations were ignored. And that's why he was pouting.
He'd never been ignored before. Never. When he was Tutankhamen, all he'd had to
do was raise a finger and concubines would come running.
And after becoming Guardian? He didn't even have to raise that finger. Men and
women from all over the world lined up hoping to spend time in his bed. Beautiful
men and women. Well educated, exciting, knowledgable men and women. He had a few
favorites, but none that had ever really made him wish for eternity.
Then he'd met Daniel. He wasn't the best looking man Tut had ever met, he was cute.
And sweet and sexy and kind...Tut sighed. There was nothing definable about his
reaction. No one single thing that he could put his finger on and say 'this is
why I want him'. It was merely the unique combination that was Daniel.
Wanting someone to talk to, Tut entered the main temple and sat on the cushions
surrounding the Hellmouth. "Can I ask you a question?"
"Of course, Guardian. What do you wish to know?"
"Am I spoiled?"
"We do not understand, Guardian."
Tut flopped down on his back and stared up at the ceiling. "I want Daniel, but
he's ignoring me. And now I'm acting like a brat. I'm spoiled. Is that why
Daniel doesn't want anything to do with me?"
"It may simply be the fact that his culture is restrictive in regards to sexuality."
Tut frowned, "Yes, I'd forgotten about that particular quirk. Nonsense really.
But we aren't there, we're here. And here I make the rules."
"Guardian, we agree with you. You are behaving like a brat."
Tut sat up and stared at the Hellmouth, his mouth doing a passable imitation of
a stranded fish. Then he started laughing. "I deserved that. Gods above and below,
what is wrong with me? I can't believe I said that."
"It may simply be the the added strain of additional wards, Guardian. You should
adjust soon."
Tut propped his chin in his hand, "Why doesn't Xander have these problems? When
we first bonded, I was practically comatose for a month. Xander was incapaciated
for less than a day. And he his control is effortless. I still get a headache
if I get too close to an overload."
"Xander is currently with his wards, we could join him," the Hellmouth offered,
actually sounding eager.
Tut jumped to his feet and shrugged out of his clothes without a second thought.
"Sounds like a plan," he said as he slid into the dark waters.
*****
Daniel heard the splash and peeked around the corner to make sure the coast was
clear. He hadn't meant to eavesdrop, but he was kinda glad that he'd overheard
Tutankhamen's conversation with the Hellmouth. Now Tut's invitation to stay in
his room made sense. At the time, Daniel had thought that the Guardian was just
be nice to him.
Daniel could feel the flush staining his cheeks, he felt like an idiot. It had
just never occured to him that the Guardian wanted to have sex with him. He'd
been told, by more than one person, that he couldn't see the forest for the trees.
Now that he knew, what was he going to do about it?
Daniel wandered around the main temple, reading the hierogliphs decorating every
square inch of the walls while absent mindedly muttering to himself. He didn't
realize that someone was listening until they spoke.
"Why wouldn't the Guardian find you attractive, Daniel?"
Daniel whirled around, his heart in this throat, "Who's there?"
"We are, Daniel. We are always here."
Daniel took one hesitant step towards the Hellmouth, "Uh, hello?"
"Greetings, Daniel. We apologize if we startled you."
"No. No. That's all right. I just didn't realize you were listening to me. Or
would talk to me for that matter."
The pool rippled, "Since the merging, we may speak with whomever who choose."
Daniel's natural curiously overcame any hesitation he might have felt. Sitting next
to the pool he asked, "The merging?"
"Yes. Once Guardian Xander bonded with two Hellmouths, things have been different.
We, all of us, are in constant contact now. Before, we knew of the others, of course,
but never communicated. All our energy went to our own Guardian. Sharing the
power between all Hellmouths has changed us."
"Changed? How?"
"We are more...aware...now. Connected as we are, we encompass the planet. We listen
and we learn."
"What do you learn?"
"Many things, Daniel. Many, many things."
*****
Jack closed his mouth with a snap, the forbiding expression on the general's face
preventing him from digging the hole he was in any deeper. He took a deep breath
and counted to ten. "General, I'd be the first to admit that Daniel is a pain in
the ass. But he's our pain in the ass. We need him."
Jack threw his hands up when the general's face darkened, "I know he messed up.
But beside the fact that he's been with us for five years, he's still a civilian.
He's saved our asses more than once. The snakeheads would have overrun us years
ago if it hadn't been for him. Don't we owe him for that?"
"Dammit, Jack," Hammond shouted. "Of course we owe him, but that doesn't change
the fact that he set a potentially lethal force loose in the universe. We have
no idea what the replicators are up to now. For all we know, they've already
destroyed the Asgard homeworld. Our allies are dropping all around us, we can't
afford to lose any more."
"General..."
"No, Jack. My decision stands. As soon as Dr. Jackson can be found, he'll be held
for trial on the charges of treason."
A bone stirring hum filled the air and Jack grinned when Thor appeared next to him,
but the Asgard was not alone. A young human stood next to him. "Thor! You're back!
You are Thor, aren't you?" Jack asked with a frown.
Thor gave what passed for a smile, "Yes, O'Neill. I am Thor."
"So, how did you...you know?" Jack asked.
"This is Rylk," Thor replied, pointing at the young man standing behind him. "He
aided in my retrieval. The Asgard High Command has sent us here to offer our
thanks for our new allies."
"Allies?" General Hammond asked.
"Yes. Rylk is of the new generation of Replicators. Once their queen, Reese,
called them home, we followed. They have been most helpful. Rylk and several of
his siblings returned to the Asgard homeworld and are helping us repair the damage
they caused when still in their infant stage. They have also instigated innovations
in several of our sciences."
"Wait, you mean he's a Replicator?" Jack asked, obviously stunned.
Thor tilted his head, the typical Asgard sign of confusion. "Yes. Did not Dr.
Jackson tell you? He and the one they call the Guardian helped the Replicators
reach the next stage in their evolution. They are now capable of reason and quite
eager to make amends for their previous actions. The High Command wishes Dr. Jackson
and the Guardian to come to Home World and meet with them. This is a great honor,
O'Neill."
Jack leaned back in his chair and gave General Hammond a grin. The general just
buried his head in his hands and wished he'd never gotten out of bed that morning.
*****
Daniel was in Heaven. The Hellmouth was more that willing to talk about anything
and everything. Ancient civilizations, similarities between cultures on opposite
sides of the world. Confirmation of his beliefs that the ancient peoples of South
America and Egypt came from the same background gave him a particular sense of
vindication.
And it all came down to the same thing. Atlantis. Before they became corrupted by
the Goa'uld, Atlantians were travelers, explorers and teachers. But they didn't
just pass on their own ideas, they encouraged the peoples they met to think.
And that gift persevered even today.
Daniel would freely admit that sometimes he was a little slow when it came to
relationships and relating to other people. So it took him a little while to realize that the Hellmouth was
making him think. Trying to force him beyond his own cultural barriers and beliefs.
Once he noticed though, he had to laugh. "I get it. Sexual mores are set by the
people in power in any given culture. I knew that. Queen Victoria is a perfect
example. An entire language changed based on what she found offensive. But knowing
and recognizing that fact doesn't really change anything. I'm just not attracted
to men sexually."
"If it is merely a physical response, we can change that for you."
"Excuse me?" Daniel asked, completely shocked by the nonchalant offer.
"It would take no effort. The Guardian Xander was physically opposed to having
male concubines until he bonded. He is now happier than he has ever been."
Daniel sputtered for a moment before he managed to spit out, "You changed him? Why?!
Does he know? That's just wrong!"
Not having a physical form limited the Hellmouth in some ways, but it still managed
to convey it's derision at that remark. "Xander agreed to become Guardian. In doing
so, he became ours to do with as we willed. And he was...damaged. Changes were
necessary."
"What do you mean damaged? And if he was damaged, why was he chosen?"
"All guardians have several things in common. They are all male, they all
have dark hair and dark eyes, but the most important thing is that their sense of self is...weak...for lack of a better word. But Xander's was almost non-existent. He had been poorly treated for his entire life and learned to expect such treatment. More importantly, he learned to be subservient to females. This was not acceptable. Should he have
female concubines, they would eventually discover that they could control him. Then
we would have to take steps. It seemed expedient to remove his desire for female
companionship. We have surrounded him with males of exceptional beauty and strength.
Supernatural beings that will be with him for all time. He is our Guardian. Our
father, brother, friend and child. He is eternal, as are we. We want him to know
joy and peace, so we will know the same."
Daniel crossed his arms over his chest and glared at the pool of black water. "You're
trying to convince me that Tut, one of the most arrogant men I have ever met, had
a low sense of self esteem? Please."
"You are not thinking, Daniel. Ling Si was born a slave in the household of a
warrior. He was raised to serve, but saw his service as a source of pride. He
does us proud. Tutankhamen was born to rule. Pharaoh of an ancient people who
saw him as God and king. He was Egypt, but his life was not his own. Priests,
laws, rituals and tradition dictated his every move down to the clothes he wore,
the food he ate, when he slept and even who he spoke to. To him, becoming Guardian
meant freedom, if only in a small way."
Daniel refused to budge, "That doesn't matter. You changed Xander's fundamental
self. That's just wrong."
"He is happy. That is all that matters."
"Just because you made him think he's happy, that doesn't mean he really is."
"Very well. Come, Daniel. We will ask him." The Hellmouth swelled
up and pulled him in.
*****
Tut had to admit that he enjoyed spending time inside the Hellmouth. There was
a sense of contentment and security he only found while immersed inside the oily
black water. Finding Xander inside the huge network of streams and eddies was a
work of no moment. It required only a simple thought.
"Xander! What are you doing?" Tut asked incredulously when he found his brother
Guardian apparently in the midst of a panic attack.
A look of sheer relief flashed across Xander's face when he saw Tut. "Oh, thank
God. You've got to help me!"
For the first time in hundreds of years, Tut knew fear. "What happened?" he asked,
not really sure that he wanted to know.
"They're going crazy! Squealing, laughing, planning and cooking. It was supposed
to be simple. Just a quiet ceremony, you know? Then Cordy had to get into the
act. So I figured I'd better tell Cheryl and Mary. I don't want those two women
pissed at me for any reason. They decided that this had to be done right.
What the Hell does that mean? And Nathaniel is tearing up the closet trying to find
just the right outfit. Of course Spike and Asher are just egging him on. And somehow
one of the reporters that have been hanging out around the restaurant heard and is
blabbing to all and sundry."
Xander drew in another breath to continue his tirade, but Tut slammed his hand over
his mouth so he could get a word in edgewise. "I might be able to help, Xander, if
I had the slightest idea what you were talking about."
Even in the odd light of the Hellmouth, the blush covering Xander's face was easy to
see. "Sorry. Um, I asked Nathaniel to be my consort. Then I decided I might as
well ask the others at the same time. I didn't want them to feel left out, you know?
And then Cordy, remember her? The totally droolworthy dryad babe? Well, she had
a vision and got pissed because I didn't invite her. So I told her she could come
and she's bringing the guys with her. And like I said, I don't want Cheryl and Mary
pissed at me, so I figured I'd better invite them too." Xander's face suddenly went
alarmingly pale, "I was going to ask you, honest. I just haven't had time yet. I
know it wouldn't take any time, not with us being connected and everything but things
have just be crazy, you know. Tut? Why are you naked?"
The laughter bubbled up inside his chest until Tutankhamen could no longer contain
it. Xander looked slightly insulted for a moment, but quickly joined in. "Ah, Xander.
What did we ever do without you? Let's deal with this one thing at a time, shall we?
I'm naked because I hate what my clothes look like after I leave the Hellmouth. As
for the preparations, allow them to do as they will and ignore them. When it comes
down to it, this is between you and your consorts. No one else. And I would be
honored to attend. But I would suggest we contact Ling Si. He is the only one
of us who has taken a consort, he would probably be able to offer more advice."
Xander nodded, "Good point. My brain just isn't working today." Xander closed his
eyes and Tut could actually feel the message streaking towards China and their absent
brother. Xander opened his eyes and asked, "Did you need something? Or were you
just taking a break?"
"We haven't had much time to talk since we merged the Hellmouths and I had some
questions. All of this," Tut said with a wave of his hand, "seems to come so very
easily for you. It took me months to learn how to control the power flow. I wanted
to know what your secret was."
Xander shrugged, "I don't think about it, I just do it. It's not like there are a
lot of rules to follow. And the Hellmouths will do most of it if you let them. If
I have a bunch of energy to burn, I just change the temple. It looks really cool
now, not that it looked bad before. Or I spend a couple of hours with the guys.
They burn up tons. I actually had to pull power for that thing we did with Reese.
Maybe you could restore the pyramids or something. How about the Sphinx? That'd
be good practice."
Tut gaped at him, "I never thought of that."
Xander grinned, "I think a lot of your problems come from your Warden. He told you
how things had to be done, so that's what you did. Harry didn't really have a lot
of time to spend with me before the shit got ugly. And after that, what was the
point? And I think when we merged all the Hellmouths, we changed things. We could
always ask Creator, I'd bet he'd know."
Ling Si quickly arrived and after offering his congratulations and accepting his
invitation, he agreed with Tut. What others did made no difference, just accept it
and move on. But he did suggest that Xander tag the people he wanted to attend,
just to keep out the riff raff. Like reporters and protestors.
"Maybe I can let them come and give them to the guys for a wedding present." That
started a whole new conversation on appropriate gifts for the consorts of a Guardian.
The ideas got more and more ridiculous until the three Guardians were practically
incoherent with laughter.
Xander was gasping when he said, "At least I won't have to worry about that whole
speak now or forever hold your piece thing."
"Uh...actually, Xander, I wanted to talk to you about that," Daniel said quietly.
Xander considered banging his against the table just to see if his head had actually
gone numb. One quick tug at his ear proved it. Nope, head is okay. Brain has died.
Xander wondered if the Public Health department should investigate. They should slap a warning on Daniel, just in the interest of public safety. Xander
could see it now.
'Warning! Listening to this man ramble for a period of more than one hour has been proven to cause severe brain damage.'
Oh yeah, put him and Giles together and we'll have the most lethal weapon known
to man.
Having his wards touch his mind was a welcome relief. 'Hey guys, what's up?'
'Xander, there is a ship approaching.'
'Huh?'
'An alien vessel is approaching the island.'
'Ooookkkkaaayyy. What do we do?'
'We believe Colonel O'Neill and General Hammond are onboard. As well as a person
who bears a remarkable resemblance to Reese.'
'Let 'em in. I want to know why Reese's people are traveling. I shut down their
gate to keep them at home and away from people who'd like to take them apart
to see how they work.'
Xander felt a ripple in the power that constantly surrounded him and turned to
Daniel. "We have company coming. Jack, General Hammond and some others."
Daniel's face went pale, "Uh, I should probably leave, Xander."
Xander grinned and shook his head, "Nope. We're going into the throne room and
wait for our guests. Then I'm going to explain some things to all of you.
And then, I'm getting married. Now, shall we?"
*****
Thor was impressed by the sophistication of the shields surrounding the small island.
His equipment could detect no generators or power sources, but there was definitely
something protecting the island. And as alarms started screaming around the ship,
something was scanning his ship as well.
"Um, Thor? What's going on?" O'Neill asked, as he looked around for something
to kill.
"We are being scanned, O'Neill."
"Oh. Is this a bad thing?"
"I do not believe so, O'Neill. We were merely being - checked out - as you would say.
The shield protecting the island has been dropped. We can now transport down to
the temple."
"Good. Let's do it."
*****
Xander leaned back in his throne and grinned at the people who materialized in the
middle of his throne room. "Ooohhh, pretty lights. Way to make an entrance, Jack.
Want to introduce me to your friend?" Xander asked, pointing at the tiny gray person
standing next to General Hammond.
O'Neill glanced at General Hammond, who nodded.
"This is Thor of the Asgard, Ryan of the Replicators and you know General Hammond."
Xander tipped his head, "General. Nice to see you again. Sorry about that whole
thing before, but there were things going on that I couldn't tell you about."
Hammond was still more than a little pissed, but he'd learned to put aside his
personal feelings a long time ago. "Guardian. Thank you for allowing us to visit."
Xander just grinned and shook his head, "You need to take lessons, Jack. But, where
are my manners?" Waving his hand at his guests, he made chairs for them, indicating
that they should seat themselves.
Once everyone had settled, Xander's eyes turned black and he said, "Greetings to
Thor of the Asgard and Ryan of Reesica. Welcome to the Hellmouth."
Ryan's smile was enormous while Jack and General Hammond just looked confused.
Daniel cleared his throat and waved his hand from his position next to Xander's throne.
"Uh, hi, Jack. General Hammond. Um, Reesica is the name of Reese's home world.
They, um, don't like being called Replicators."
"And you know this, how?" Jack asked.
Daniel scratched his head, "Well, I was there, Jack. When - you know - things
changed."
General Hammond's face was stern as he said, "Yes, I'd still like to speak to you
about that, Dr. Jackson."
"Play nice, General Hammond," Xander chided. "I'll explain everything to you if
you can be patient for just a little longer," Xander said in a normal tone of voice.
"We would like to know why Ryan of Reesica and Thor of the Asgard are here."
Xander's voice changing like that freaked Jack out every time he heard it, but before
he could say anything, Thor offered an explanation.
"When the Replicators left our worlds, we followed. Once we located their home world
we called the rest of our fleet. Before they could arrive, Reese contacted us.
We were most intrigued. After much discussion, an alliance was formed. Reese and
her people have proven to be most helpful."
Bowing his head to Ryan, Thor continued, "Ryan was chosen to accompany me while
several others have traveled to the Asgard home world."
Seeing the frown on the Guardian's face, Ryan spoke up. "We volunteered, Guardian.
We wished to help repair the damage we caused in our quest."
"And the Asgard?"
"I believe I understand your concerns, Guardian. Asgard law strictly prohibits
experimentation on sentient beings. And the Asgard have no doubt that the Reesicans
are, indeed, sentient," Thor offered.
"We also have our own protections, Guardian. We retain some of our previous traits.
Because of this, all Reesicans are in constant contact with all other Reesicans. If something were to happen to one, all would know of it immediately." Ryan smirked slightly, "We are also now impervious to projectile weapons, as well as many types of energy weapons."
Xander laughed, "Bullet proof, huh? Good deal. But that still doesn't explain
why you're here."
"We are working with the Reesicans to help the people of the planet Lardan. Between
our two peoples, we believe we can construct orbital shield generators to protect
them from the solar shock wave heading for their planet."
Ryan nodded, "If the orbital generators work as expected, we can avoid any direct
contact with the inhabitants, thus avoiding contaminating their development. They
should never even know they were in danger."
Ryan took a deep breath, "If we determine the generators will not be adequate, we will remove the population to a safer location. We realize the problems
this will cause, and will do our best to avoid it. Reese knew of your anger at the
situation and wished you to know that we are attempting to correct it."
"This is very good news, Ryan, but it wasn't your fault. Yours or the Asgard's."
"True," Thor stated. "But the Reesicans were most eloquent in arguing their case
for aiding the Lardans. They believe that regardless of blame, they should do this
because they can and it is the right thing to do."
"Excuse me," General Hammond said, "but who are the Lardans?"
Xander pulled a small glass vial from mid-air, "Remember this? Lardan is the
planet that is going to be wiped out by the shock wave that resulted from Major
Carter causing a star to go supernova. And that is one of the things we need to
talk about."
Turning to Thor and Ryan, Xander said, "You have the thanks and gratitude of the
Guardians of the Hellmouth. I'm sure you both have other questions, would you be
willing to speak with my brothers while I deal with other matters?"
"That would be most acceptable, Guardian," Thor responded.
"Excellent. If you go through the doors behind me, you will find them waiting for
you in the garden. Don't worry about being seen, the shields are back in place."
Thor and Ryan both stood and bowed slightly before heading outside.
Once the door closed behind them, Xander looked at his remaining guests. "We have a
lot to discuss, gentlemen. Would you care to join me in the kitchen? I need coffee."
It didn't take long to get everyone situated at the table, each with the beverage
of their choice. Xander stared at his coffee cup for a minute before beginning.
"I doubt you've heard, but I'm getting married tonight. Kinda, anyway. I'm making
Nathaniel, Asher and Spike my consorts instead of them being concubines." Seeing the
confusion on Jack's face, Xander laughed, "Give me a minute, Jack, and I'll explain."
Nodding at Daniel, Xander said, "When Daniel found out, he got worried, thinking
the Hellmouth was making me do something I didn't want to do. He thinks they've
done something to my mind. And I know you, General Hammond, would like some answers
about just what I am and my bond to the Hellmouths. Well, I'm going to tell you."
"I know you both understand about keeping secrets, and I think after I've finished
explaining, you'll understand why this is a secret that must be kept."
"Go on," the General said.
"You want to know if the Hellmouth changed me in some way? Yes, they did. They
had to. You've all seen me do things, but I don't think you really understand just
what I'm capable of."
"Daniel? How old is Tut?" Xander asked suddenly.
"Well, historical records state that Tutankhamen died when he was eighteen. But
we now know that Tut didn't die, his friend was killed in his place. So I'd say
Tut was eighteen when he became Guardian of the Hellmouth in Egypt."
Xander nodded, "Yep. Ling Si was twenty one when he was chosen. And before you
ask, I'll turn twenty in a couple of months. So what we basically have is a bunch
of teenagers with unlimited power."
General Hammond's face blanched and Xander nodded, "Yep. Scary, isn't it? I can
do, literally, anything. We can end world hunger, disease and completely eliminate war.
Not to mention preventing droughts, earthquakes or any other natural disaster you
can think of."
"So why don't you?" Jack asked.
"Because just because we can do something, it doesn't mean that we should." Leaning
back in his chair, Xander asked, "How long would it take for people to start treating
us like Gods? And if we're being treated like Gods, how long would it take for us
to start acting like Gods? Guardians are immortal. We never get sick and we can't
be killed. If we get out of control, there's nothing anyone can do to stop us."
Xander laughed at the expressions on their faces. "I see you're starting to get
the idea. The Hellmouths realized the danger involved with making someone a Guardian,
that's why they're so picky about who is chosen. Once we bond with our wards, we're
changed, beyond the whole power and immortality thing. To become Guardian, you
have to be willing to give up everything you are or could ever be. All I ever wanted
was to have a good job, get married and have a family. As Guardian, that can never happen."
"What does being the Guardian have to do with you not being able to have kids?" Jack asked curiously.
"The power surge when I bonded to the Hellmouth destroyed any possibility of me
having children," Xander said matter of factly.
"So, since you can't have children, the Hellmouth removed your desire for them so
you wouldn't have a constant reminder of what you can't have," Daniel said quietly,
finally understanding what the Hellmouth had been trying to tell him.
Xander nodded, "The Hellmouth wants me to be happy. And in order for me to be happy, some things had to change. Now I have Nathaniel, Asher and Spike. Tonight we'll
be married and they'll become immortal so we'll be together forever. And then
my life will be complete. I don't abuse my power and position because I have no
desire to. Everything I want, I already have."
"I still don't understand what all of this has to do with Reese's people and the Lardans."
General Hammond said shortly.
"Oh, don't worry, General. I haven't forgotten about that. I just wanted you to
understand how seriously the Hellmouth takes my happiness before we spoke about
what Star Gate command has been up to. I understand the situation with the Goa'uld,
I really do, but like I said before, you guys are fucking up. Big time. You go
to other planets without being invited, you take things that don't belong to you
and bring them back to Earth. How many times have the people of this planet been
put at risk because you guys are out there messing with things you don't understand?"
"We trying to protect the people of this planet!" Hammond shouted.
"I know you are, but at what cost?"
"There is no cost too high for us to pay."
"What about the cost other people have to pay? What about the Lardans? They have
nothing to do with this. But they're in danger as a direct result of SG-1's actions.
Even after I told you about them, did you even consider contacting these
allies of yours and asking if they could help?"
When no one spoke, Xander shook his head, "You see? That's what I mean. Somewhere
along the way, you've lost sight of the big picture. You're beginning to act like
the Goa'uld. They want something, they take it. They don't care who gets hurt along
the way. I want you to think about that. Think long and hard. Because you're
dangerously close to the edge of no return. My brothers and I will protect this
planet from the Goa'uld because Creator wishes it and that's what we were put here to
do. But we won't protect you from yourselves."
"What do you mean by that?" Jack asked in a very subdued voice.
"Just what I said, Jack. We won't play God for you. We only take direct action
when it comes to things that affect our wards. Nothing else matters to us."
General Hammond really hated having his faults shoved in his face, but he was man
enough to admit that the Guardian had a good point. He just wasn't sure what
was going to do about it.
"Xander?"
"Yeah, Daniel?"
"If you don't take direct action unless it affects the Hellmouth, what about Reese?
Or me for that matter?"
Xander slumped in his chair, he was really hoping that wouldn't have come up. But
now that it had, it was time to face the music. "What happened with Reese really
pissed us off. It never should have happened, but it did happen. We saw an opportunity
to make something good out of a really bad situation. That's why we helped Reese
and her people. Now they're friends with the Asgard and that can only be good in
the long run. And once Earth Humans really start traveling among the stars, they're
going to need all the friends they can get.
Xander took a sip of his now cold coffee and winced. "As for Daniel... do you
remember my friend Cordelia?"
"Oh yeah. She's kinda hard to forget," Jack said with a big smile.
"True. But do you remember what she can do?" Xander asked with a laugh.
"She had visions of the future," Daniel said.
"Yeah. Well, Cordy had a vision of you, Daniel. And it wasn't pretty. When you
helped me with Reese, it put you on the outs with the General here. That was unpleasant,
I know, but very, very necessary."
"You knew I wouldn't be able to turn my back on Reese, no matter how much trouble I got into. You used that because you wanted me out of SG-1. Why?"
Xander shook his head and smiled, "That's why we like you, Daniel. You have a brain
and you aren't afraid to use it, but you balance your knowledge with compassion.
That's a very rare thing and something we're going to need in the future. But Cordy's
visions were very specific. If you go off planet, you die. Someone, or something,
wants you dead. Not SG-1, just you, Daniel. And until we know who, and why, you aren't
going anywhere."
Xander looked up at the clock on the wall. "Oh shit. Sorry, guys, we're going to
have to finish this later. I'm getting married in less than an hour and I really
don't want to be late."
When Daniel started to protest Xander glared at him, "If I'm late to my wedding,
I'm going to be very, very unhappy. And we don't want that to happen, now do we?"
"Uh, no. Of course not," Daniel said hurriedly.
"Good. I hope you'll all stay for the ceremony. It's going to be out in the garden.
I think you know the way?"
Xander rushed out of the room before anyone could reply.
Their wards had warned them, but actually meeting aliens was still somewhat of
a shock. And the fact that one of them was a living machine just boggled their
minds.
But Tutankhamen and Ling Si hadn't been selected as Guardians because of their
looks. Both men had the rare ability to accept and process seemingly unbelievable
events with great aplomb.
Linked to their wards, their wealth of knowledge was increased exponentially. And
they used that knowledge ruthlessly for the good of all.
The Asgard had always been reluctant to share their technology with Earth, knowing
that knowledge given and not earned, caused more problems than it solved. And while
the Asgard believed in helping others, giving while receiving nothing in return
didn't sit well with them. Until now, Humans had little to offer a race as advanced
as the Asgard.
But the Guardians weren't exactly Human. They could, and would, use their power
to give the Asgard the one thing their technology had been unable to achieve. The
ability to once again have children.
Through the centuries, the Asgard had turned away from what they believed to be a completely
unreliable and haphazard method of reproduction. They used technology to clone
themselves, eliminating the need for the time consuming and physically draining
process of gestation and birth.
As time passed, they learned to manipulate their genetic code. They became smaller,
requiring less space and fewer calories, while at the same time, their bodies could
process those calories far more efficiently, conserving valuable resources. They had
even gone so far as to remove all physical and psychological need for sex. The
loss of their reproductive organs soon followed.
But their greatest achievement was the increased usage of their brain mass. Humans, in general,
used less than ten percent of their brains, while the Asgard were capable of utilizing
up to sixty percent, and that number was increasing with every subsequent generation.
But for all their achievements, something was missing. Some infinitesimal spark
of creativity that allowed Humans to make fantastic leaps in logic. Humans, unfortunately,
took this gift for granted. Usually for the simple reason they never realized just
how important it was for their survival.
Now, however, the technology the Asgard were so proud of, and guarded so jealously,
was slowly killing them. Less than a
millenia ago, an Asgard could expect to live for a century, barring accident or
disease, before having their consciousness moved into a new clone. Now their life
expectancy was less than twenty years. Genetic abnormalities were becoming more
and more prevalent. Neural mapping, the process by which their scientists embedded
knowledge and experience into a new clone's mind, was breaking down with little or
no warning. Vast amounts of vital information were being lost with every transfer
into a new body. All too soon, the damage would be irreparable. Most of Asgard's
leading scientists agreed, if something weren't done, their race would die out in less
than five hundred years. Those who disagreed with their prognosis expected the
end to come much sooner, some said in less than a century.
In order to prevent such an outcome, teams of scientists were devoting their lives
to finding a cure, but as any scientist would agree, finding a cure for any problem
could be a painful process, fraught with failure.
Using genetic material obtained from the cryogenically preserved bodies of their
ancestors, new clones were being made. The few that survived their awakening had
to be destroyed. Having seen such a creature, Thor was convinced that killing it
had been the only merciful thing to do. The poor thing had been misshapen and quite
obviously insane. The few hours of its life had been spent screaming in pain or
crying out in fear. Neural mapping had only made the situation worse, for then
the creature had understood what was happening and begged for death.
The Guardians of the Hellmouths of Earth offered the best, the only, hope for the
Asgards' continued survival. The Guardians could have asked for, and received, anything
the Asgards possessed. Instead, they asked only for Asgard willing to teach a
very few, special, Humans. Humans the Guardians themselves would screen and select.
The Governments of Earth would not be involved in the process.
Thor could think of no reason for the High Council to object, but object they would.
That was their nature. However, the Guardians had taken that into account. They
only wanted teachers and scientists who specialized in medicine, communication,
and natural resources. Before the Replicators, Thor, himself, had specialized in
reclamation, the ability to turn a dead planet into a thriving ecosystem. He would
be the first to volunteer.
